An innovative approach to eye care
Schools from the Elland area where invited to take part in a workshop programme for five to seven year olds developed by artist Sue Gunn on behalf of Whitakers Opticians Elland to raise awareness of the importance of good eye care from an early age.
Barney`s design of “camouflage under water spectacles” won the competition to design a pair of spectacles run by Whitaker`s Opticians in Elland. A great deal of imagination and talent was shown by year one and two pupils in the Elland area who designed spectacles for their favourite characters, as part of a workshop
programme to educate young children about eye care. Barney won a digital camera both for himself and his school Old Earth Primary. Runner up prizes of MP3 players where awarded to Jonathan from Greetland Primary School for his colourful “Noddy glasses” and George from Old Earth Primary School for his “flame throwing spectacles” designed for the character Mario. Year two teacher Miss Fox from Old Earth Primary School said: “It was a lovely experience. All the children had a brilliant time.” If you would like to see some of the wonderful spectacles the children created, there will be a selection on display in the front window of Whitakers Opticians, Southgate, Elland until the end of November.
Approximately 1 in 5 children under the age of 7 years have uncorrected sight problems which may cause problems at school with reading and writing. The NHS provide free eye tests for under 16`s and at Whitakers we are always happy to give advice on children`s eyecare and have a large selection of fashionable frames, for those children needing spectacles – some of which are available free with an NHS optical voucher.
